This shaving bowl is handmade by me in my workshop in Warwickshire, England. Steve Woodhead Studio Pottery – signed SW.
For over 10 years I have made a range of handmade shaving bowls and scuttle bowls.
Making process
Firstly, I throw each shaving bowl individually on the potter’s wheel. Just to clarify they are not industrially slip cast. Whilst each item starts with the same weight of clay they do differ slightly in height and width which adds to the individuality of the piece.
This shaving bowl incorporates a deep spiral in the base and up the walls, giving excellent purchase on the shaving brush when creating a soapy lather.
Secondly, as this bowl is designed to be held by the handle or by the base foot foot ring I add a good strong handle with a thumb grip. Additionally, there are lugs by the handle to optional position your brush.
Glazing
The shaving bowl is initially fired in the kiln to 1000C before being glazed.
All my work is dishwasher friendly, and my domestic ware has rattled around our dishwasher for the past 10 years without incidence.
Please note that I post at COST in a good box with plenty of bubble wrap.
Dimensions – approximate:
Diameter is approximately 5″ (13cm)
Height is approximately 3″ (7.5cm)
Note: the shaving brush and razor are not included, for display purposes only.
