Medium shaving scuttle bowl – #1, handmade by me in my workshop in Warwickshire, England. Steve Woodhead Studio Pottery – signed SW.
For over 10 years I have made a range of handmade shaving scuttle bowls. The original wet medium shaving scuttle bowl designs were developed with the help of shavers from around the world. Since then, further refinements have been made making them some of the best shaving scuttle bowls in the world.
Firstly, I throw each shaving scuttle individually on the potter’s wheel, comprising of the later bowl and the outer jug. Just to clarify they are not industrially slip cast. Whilst each item starts with the same weight of clay they do differ slightly in height and width which adds to the individuality of the piece.
The lather bowl incorporates throwing rings, with a deep spiral in the base continuing up the wall, this helps in the creation of a soapy lather with the shaving brush. Pouring hot water into the outer jug keeps the soapy lather warm, you can also re-heat in the microwave if you want. Feedback from shavers indicates that the shaving scuttle bowl keeps the soap lather hot for at least 10 minutes.
Secondly I join the lather bow and the outer jug together making this is a single piece scuttle. Thirdly, I add the handle with thumb grip, which makes it is easy to hold while keeping the bowl in your hand and producing very fine lather for your shave.
The shaving scuttle is initially fired in the kiln to 1000C before being glazed.
All my work is dishwasher friendly, and my domestic ware has rattled around our dishwasher for the past 10 years without incidence.
Please note that I post at COST in a good box with plenty of bubble wrap.
