I have been making a range of handmade domestic mug in stoneware for over 30 years in my studio in Warwickshire, England. I exhibit at many Ceramic shows in the country where my handmade domestic mug are often regarded as “some of the best”! In addition, Steve in the renowned author of “The Teapot Book”, detailing how studio potters throughout the world make hand-made individual teapots.
Each mug is made on the potters wheel, whilst each mug starts with the same weight of clay they do differ slightly in height and width which adds to the individuality of the piece.
These mugs are based on my Granddad’s mug – he was a Farmer in Yorkshire. I love the rustic earthy feel of this mug, created using a very coarse crank clay. The mug is glazed with a beautiful silk finish wood ash style glaze, with a wood firing effect giving a lovely toasted finish to the raw clay. I love the way the glaze dribbles down the mug. This mug is very tactile to hold and the flash of toasting creates a beautiful warm earthy feel.
The rim of the mug is thrown thin to give a comfortable feeling in the mouth. In addition, the handle incorporates a “thumb grip” which makes the mug very comfortable to hold in the hand.

These mugs are dishwasher and microwave friendly, and have rattled around our kitchen for the past 5 years without incidence.
